“Please, Miss Grete. Push when I tell you ok?”
It was a snowy evening in Wintervile and a woman named Grete Felix was giving birth. There was a rumor that giving birth on a snowy day is a bad omen for the child. People said the child dies, has horrible luck in life, or is born with a defect in their body.
“Push, Miss Grete!” The older woman delivering the child exclaimed quickly.
After a bit of a struggle, a long eared girl was born. That was I, Amilia Felix, I was born into a family of elves.
“Miss Grete? Miss Grete?!? SOMEONE CALL THE DOCTOR!” The older lady yelled.
It wasn’t easy for my mother to give birth to me, however she managed to pull through that one.
Life was going well until I hit the age of 5. One night, Dad came home drunk as a skunk. Mom was pretty upset with him as he promised to not drink ever again after one argument. They got into a big argument and they ended up divorcing. My brother was just 2 years old at the time and mom left the house completely.
Ah, right. I forgot to mention mom gave birth to my baby brother “Arnold” just 3 years after my birth.
I started learning how to cook, clean, and how to raise my baby brother. Dad would come home drunk completely wasted and I had to make sure he got in bed and that he didn’t stir up trouble.
“Ame, I’ll remarry someone soon so you’ll need to behave in front of her and be a good girl ok?” I didn’t like the nickname but I got used to it, After all I didn’t want to start unnecessary drama.
Although I was shocked at how my dad casually got over my mother, I thought that it might be an adult thing and that I’ll understand later in life.
The woman my dad married was “Alexia Henry” a well-known server at an inn he used to go to all the time. She was tall, blonde, had short hair, and some decently sized assets. Something that would get any man to lust over her.
When she first came over I behaved like my dad asked me, I cleaned without being told to, cooked them meals and still tried to do my best for my little brother.
One day, I slipped and spilled a cup of water. Usually, that wouldn’t warrant a scolding but on that day my step-mother slapped me very hard, my cheek ended up swelling. I noticed that my dad’s attitude changed over the past few days. I could tell it was her doing as well.
My dad ended up locking me in my room as a punishment, and I guess that’s when I stopped calling him father. The next morning, I woke up to find the door unlocked. I found it strange since my punishment was supposed to be longer but nevertheless, I walked outside my room to find Robert on the floor sobbing.
“Everything.. Everything is gone..” I could hear Robert sobbing loudly.
I sat next to him, and started patting his head. Robert looked at me with a look of regret in his eyes. He got up and went to the inn straight away.
Not sure why he did, either he was looking for Alexia or just going to wash down his sorrows with beer like he usually did.
This occurrence was a frequent one for a few days at this point. Until one day, the house started burning down. Not knowing what to do, I grabbed a bucket, filled it with water and tried to put it out which didn’t work. Later, I realized it was an oil fire that can’t be put out with water. I don’t know if it was Alexia’s doing or not but she definitely had a part to play in it. Amidst all this my brother was standing close to me. I was 7 at the time and he was 4.
but suddenly it felt like time was passing slowly. A piece of the floor of the second floor started falling, I suddenly jumped at my little brother and put my body in a way in which I would take the full force of the crashing wooden planks.
A bright white light flashed in front of me “Ah.. At least he’s ok..” Is all I could think of before suddenly waking up to the yelling of old men and adventurers
“They’re safe! Everyone, get sheets to cover the flame! Someone, bring a blanket to cover the kids!”
“Woah..” one of the adventurers let out a surprised sound as he came closer to us. “Hey little miss, mind lowering your shield?”
‘Shield ? What shield?! Is he crazy or what?!’ is all I could think of without noticing the giant icy shield I had around me. I looked at my brother. He looked safe and sound and was looking at me with amazed eyes. At that point I fainted out of relief.
Not sure what happened after that but the old lady that delivered me and also delivered my brother not so long later escorted us to our mother’s house where we would reside for a while.
The moment my mother saw me, she gasped looking at my thigh. When I looked, I saw something majestic. A white crystal was tied to an accessory there.
“Amilia, you’ll enter the magic school system.” My mother said with a smile on her face.
As an elf at a magic school, you’re bound to be bullied. Elves have a naturally small mana pool that doesn’t have much room for improvement either. So, discrimination, bullying and harassment were all things that could happen to an elf.
Luckily for me I met another elf from one of the senior years pretty early in the school year.
“Could I enlighten you on something, Junior?” I nodded to her question to avoid any bullying
She closed the distance between us and then tapped my ears ‘Another form of harassment huh..’ Was what I thought at first then I looked at her and she was smiling.
“Use your mana to hide your ears like I do~” She whispered in my ears and started walking away. I bowed to her as she was leaving to thank her.
From that point onward the bullying slowed down majorly. I kept studying to impress my mom until one day, disaster struck. My mom died. From what the doctors said it was an incurable unknown disease, but from my studies I learnt a mana detection spell. My mother, Grete Felix, died of mana deficiency. It wasn’t uncommon for elves who gave birth more than once however. In fact, over 50% of elves die of mana deficiency.
My father tried to attend the funeral but my little brother, Arnold, refused for him to attend. Our guardian tried her best to convince him but he stubbornly said that mom’s will said for father not to attend.
I became well-known somehow, I came top of the year every year, I was asked to lecture juniors and even became known amongst the top names in the kingdom. At 16 I was tasked with helping my teachers teach as the university had nothing left to teach me.
At 19, I was called by the Acting Leader herself, Thoka Smith. She said I came by a recommendation of one of her most brilliant soldiers and Deputy Commander.
“I heard you were the cream of the top, Amilia Felix. I have a request for you”
I couldn’t believe myself at first. ‘A request?! from the Acting Leader ?! Of course I’d agree no matter how ridiculous it sounded!’
“I want you to use summoning to summon us a great hero.”
I barely touched on summoning magic as it was very uncommon. A request of such magnitude felt monumental at first, but then I started borrowing as many books as humanly possible to research that topic.
There happened to be someone who summoned a hero to this world but the person he summoned refused and went on a rampage. To be frank it was scary.
It took me a few sleepless nights to get it done, but by the end of it I had managed to find the proper magic circle. Light shone as I poured mana into it and suddenly someone appeared.
I couldn’t help but jump around excitedly at that achievement but it had happened! I managed to do it!
Convincing him to help us was not extremely difficult but it was troublesome and after so long here I am, needed for another monumental task.
Suddenly I snapped back to reality. Yes, I, Amilia Felix, was about to die.
‘If I’m dying anyways I’ll just buy them time!’
“ICE PRISON!!” I yelled at the top of my lungs at Athena who was just about to cut me down.
